Area Rug Washing & Cleaning

How can I tell if my Area Rugs need Washing?

Moisten a white towel, then rub the rug to see if any soil is transferred onto the towel. Light brown transferring suggests very light carbon soiling. Dark brown suggests your rug is ready for washing. Black tells you your Oriental rug is very dirty.

Will washing wear out my antique, hand-made or specialty area rugs?

No, not all all! Properly done professional washing will not wear your rug out. Actually, the 8-Step Rug Immersion Washing Process will help your rug's longevity. Here's how proper washing works: Woolite-type mild detergents and generous amounts of cold-water rinsing (preferably soft water) will actually rejuvenate and re-moisturize your rug's wools, preserving and enhancing them. Since wool is an organic and natural fiber containing large amounts of natural lanolin oils, it is important to use generous amount of cold, soft water and Woolite detergents for washing.

Why Shouldn't a wall-to-wall carpet cleaner clean my area rugs?

Since rugs need to go through a cycled wash process with washing the rug's entire back and fringes, an actual wall-to-wall-type carpet cleaner can clean only the surface of the rug. Incidentally, hot water should never be used on wool, as it changes the yarn texture.

What if the colors have bled in my Oriental/Hand-Woven/Persian or Wool Rug?

Dyes that are not colorfast can bleed if not set prior to washing and restoration. Unfortunately, we cannot fix this particular problem. We always test rugs for colorfastness and will not wash a rug that will bleed. Some consumers find some relief by carefully placing the rug for a few days in the summer sun and letting the sun's ultraviolet rays pull out some of the run colors. Caution myst be exercised here with exposure to the sun because overexposure can result in faded colors.

What happens if I'm not happy with the washing job?

If for some reason you are unhappy with our washing service, you simply don't pay the washing charges: however, we do have to charge for the shipping costs back to you given a return.

Are there certain types of area rugs that should only be cleaned professionally?

Your average run-of-the-mill area rug can often be cleaned as a DIY project at home. BUT, if you've got Persian or Oriental rugs (which are generally made of silk or wool), or any other rug with a "dry clean only" label, its best to take them to a professional cleaner like RugSpa. These kinds of rugs are pricey and you don't want to risk damaging them with a less-than-perfect DIY cleaning job. That said, you may be okay spot-cleaning them for stains, but first, pretest the cleaning agent in an inconspicuous area on that rug.

How long does it take for a rug to be cleaned at your plant?

  • Inspection
  • Dusting
  • Immersion Wash in Soap and Water

Do you receive rugs that are out-of-state?

Yes we do! We will take and ship any or your rugs to any of the lower 48 states in the U.S.!

What happens to your rug surface by not having it deep professionally immersion washed every other year?

Imagine briskly rubbing sandpaper over your cars paint and scratching and de-lustering the color and finish. It's exactly the same diminishing the color and wool on your rug.

How does deep professional immersion washing preserve your rug colors and finish?

Professional immersion washing naturalizes the acidity and therefore preserves your rugs colors and finish.

Does immersion washing remove the deeply embedded sand and grit deep in your pile that prematurely wears your rug out?

Absolutely YES! Dry soil extraction prior to washing is completed at RugSpa® to ensure
removal of harmful grit and debris before washing your rug. A typical 8’x10’ rug accumulates 10
pounds of dirt every 2-3 years.

Area Rug Repair

Do You Repair Area Rugs?

Yes, we do. Whether we are repairing or restoring, we re-fringe, re-edge and re-weave holes. We first find the right colored wools to match your rug's texture and color. With hand-knotted and handmade rugs we repair them by hand. With machined rugs we machine-repair them. So the repair technique depends on the rug type. We also have skilled repair facilities for large re-weaving jobs.

How much does rug repair cost?

Our Area Rug Repairs can range in pricing based on a few factors: The Type of Area Rug you have, the extent of the damages to the rug and what type of repairs your rug may need. We supply various rug repair services so it is best to call to learn more about the pricing. Please call 1-800-624-7847 or email info@rugspa.com to get a free estimate. Please provide the rug type, the size and the type of repair needed, be it fringes, edges, tears, holes and the like.

How often should I have my rug restoration done?

Depending on the location and traffic on the rug, the washing of hand-knotted rugs can vary from 2 to 5 years. If your Persian rug is a light color, it will be easy to distinguish soling on the face of the rug. Below we provide a breakdown for length to wash for type of rug that may be useful to your decision. Kitchens/Bathroom/Hallways/Entrance: every 2 years. LivingRoom/Dining/Family Room: Every 3 to 5 years. Bedrooms: every 5 years. Walls: Every 10 years.

Moths have eaten my Rug! What Should I Do?

Many fine rugs are made up of fine natural fibers such as wool which lose their natural oily properties and become drier making them easier for moths to eat than a new rug. Firstly, you should vacuum both the front and back of all your rugs and place them in an area with direct sunlight; the ultraviolet rays will kill the eggs that are hiding in your carpet. Secondly, you should sanitize or wash your rug/bring it in to RugSpa to get washed professionally! Small moth-eaten areas can often be rewoven and large areas can be shaved and sheared to minimize the damage. Different techniques including dying can also be used to restore damaged areas. Do not treat your rug chemically!
