How Weather Changes Affect Your Home's Rugs

As we make the transition into the colder months of the year, you’re probably focused on switching out your summer clothes for sweaters and sweatshirts — but your wardrobe isn’t the only thing that needs to be refreshed. The fall and winter months are the ideal time to schedule professional rug cleaning, and for a good reason! While this time of year is known for beautiful leaves and cooler temperatures, rain and snow is also quite common. When you return home, you may find yourself tracking in dirt that leaves you with wet and dirty rugs. That’s why it’s important to schedule regular rug cleaning so you can ensure your family continues breathing easy until spring’s sunshine is on the horizon.

To help minimize the amount of dirt and debris being tracked into your home, the team at RugSpa has put together several tips to keep your rugs clean this fall and winter.

4 Ways to Reduce Dirt in Your Home

Although professional rug cleaning is the most effective way to improve the appearance on your rugs, there are steps you can take to reduce the amount of dirt being tracked inside your home. Here are four ways to keep your area rugs looking their best.

1. Use a welcome mat – Welcome mats are not only a fun way to welcome guests to your home, but they serve an important purpose as well. Along with boasting a pretty pattern or charming greeting, they allow those entering your home to wipe their feet before coming inside. Instead of placing a single welcome mat by the front door, consider which entrances to your home are used the most and place a welcome mat at each of them.

2. Avoid wearing shoes indoors – When you arrive home after a long day, the last thing you want to do is stop in the entryway and take off your shoes. However, having a no shoes policy is one of the most effective ways to cut down on the amount of dirt, debris, and allergens that get lodged deep within your rugs. Keep a shoe rack or a basket by the front door for your family and guests to store their shoes. You may even want to have socks or slippers that guests can use while inside your home!

3. Clean your pet’s paw post-walk – If you have a cat or dog that goes on walks outside, they’re probably dragging dirt all around your home. Store towels or wipes near the entrance to your house so you can clean and dry your pet’s feet and prevent muddy footprints from being tracked on your floors and furniture.

4. Limit your home’s entry points – Instead of having friends and family enter your home through the front door, back door, mudroom, garage, or other entryway, limit the entry points to one. This will help you reduce the amount of dirt being brought into your home and allow you to focus the majority of your efforts on one section of your home.

Whether you’re looking to reduce dirt in your own home or an Airbnb you manage, following these four tips will help extend the life of your rug between professional cleanings.
