Having a pet might be one of the coolest things in the entire world. That is until your pet stains your carpet or rug with its outdoor behavior. An untrained pet is most troublesome when it comes to toilet etiquette. Pet stains can be quite hard to clean up if they keep recurring. A pet does not pee in one spot so if the accidents are a frequent and repeated occurrence, that could be a huge problem. So how do you deal with the problem before it becomes too much of a menace to handle?
Create a toilet schedule for the pet
Training a pet is something that requires a lot of patience and repetition. The best way to ensure that the pet understands what is being taught is by creating a schedule and following it diligently. The schedule can be made by watching or researching on the pet’s toilet habits and then maximizing on them. For instance, if the pet takes two hours after meals for it to take the toilet break, you can create a schedule around this fact. You can then time the toilet habits so that you can train the pet to go to a designated area each time it feels to.
It is difficult to train a pet since it does not respond to teaching as well as human beings. By using rewards however, you can effectively train the pet to adapt certain behavior. Each time the pet goes to the toilet in a designated area, you should issue verbal praise and a reward, such as a special treat. Avoid issuing punishment when the pet adopts an undesirable behavior so that you can retain the trust in the relationship. However, do not issue rewards for bad behavior. The pet soon learns that good toilet etiquette results in reward and learns to adopt the behavior eventually, even in the absence of reward.
Train the pet to issue certain signals when it is about to go to the toilet. This enhances communication between yourself and the pet. The signals should be something distinct that is not part of the pet’s normal behavior, such as rolling over twice. The signal should be trained on the pet just before it goes to the toilet so the pet’s behavior has to be studied carefully. After a signal, you can then train the pet to go to a designated place. This works to improve the efficiency and effectiveness of toilet training.
